Learners from Langa, Bonteheuwel and Athlone enjoy a class in the clouds

The City’s Environmental Management Department (EMD) partnered with the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) to support its Class in the Clouds education programme, in celebration of the annual International Day for Biological Diversity tomorrow, 22 May 2026. The Class in the Clouds programme kicked off on Monday, 18 May 2026 with learners from Mokone Primary School who had the opportunity to experience the iconic Table Mountain, one of the Seven Wonders of Nature. These outings will continue until next week, with learners from a range of schools including Mimosa Primary School in Bonteheuwel; Garlandale Primary School in Athlone; Cypress Primary School in Bridgetown and Moshesh Primary School in Langa, also taking part.

The City’s EMD sponsored MyCiTi buses to transport learners from various under-resourced primary schools to Table Mountain and also provided lunch packs for each learner, while TMACC in turn covered the cost of the cable car experience as well as the education programme.
 
‘The City partnered with TMACC to give learners, who might not otherwise have had the opportunity, a chance to go up our iconic Table Mountain. This outdoor educational experience with their peers has been a truly memorable one for these kids. These outings are in celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity tomorrow, 22 May 2026, which is focusing on acting locally for global impact this year.

‘Our partnership with the TMACC has looked at the need to expand the minds and learning experiences of our bright and ambitious young learners in less fortunate areas in Cape Town by taking them to the top of our iconic Table Mountain to learn about the world-renowned biodiversity of their very own city. We hope this experience plants a seed of environmental consciousness and encourages learners to see the role they can play as conservation ambassadors in some capacity in the future,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
 

The Table Mountain National Park is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and global biodiversity hotspot hosting an amazing 8,200 species of plants, many of which are endemic to Cape Town.
